What is drinking in moderation?

Drinking in moderation means no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men.

One drink is:

  • 12 ounces of beer
  • Five ounces of wine
  • A shot of liquor (1.5 ounces)

Some people should not drink at all:

  • Pregnant women
  • Children and teenagers
  • Persons taking certain medications. Check with your healthcare provider if you take any medicine (even non-prescription medicine) every day or most days.
  • Anyone who can not control how much they drink.
  • Anyone who plans to drive. Wait at least three hours after your drink before driving or operating heavy machinery.
